Paper Outline: KAON AEROGEL CERENKOV DETECTOR

INTRODUCTION

  • Introduction to physics and infrastructure, i.e., spectrometers in Hall C

  • Cite other experiments (approved) that also require the detector?

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

  • Experiment requirements and motivation for aerogel detector
  • Design choices
    • threshold vs. RICH
    • box dimensions and PMT placement etc.
    • choice of aerogel radiators
    • impact on other detectors, e.g., delta electrons
    • impact on other detectors: multiple scattering calculation

CONSTRUCTION AND COUNTER LAYOUT

  • Details of the detector box and tray construction
    • Motivation and explanation of materials used in the construction, i.e., aluminum, honeycomb, etc.
    • Details on the fabrication and construction
    • Construction of a frame to hold aerogel in center of box for cases where box not entirely filled
  • Short description of detector components
    • Choice of reflective materials, wires to hold aerogel, etc.
    • Aerogel used, i.e., manufacturer
    • PMTs (geometry, properties, details on their installation in detector, i.e., magnetic shielding, aluminum cylinders etc.)
  • Construction of a single counter (Prototype) and tests performed with it
    • photoelectron yield for different refractive indexes
    • photoelectron yield for different thickness (number of tiles) of aerogel

AEROGEL STUDIES

  • Characterization of aerogel tiles
    • Variation of dimensions and refractive index tile-to-tile and batch-to-batch
    • Optical measurements (transmittance etc.)
    • Photon Yield
    • Humidity effects on aerogel (if available on time)

PHOTOMULTIPLIER TUBES STUDIES

  • Measurements of quantum efficiency and photocathode uniformity

-> Do we have Q.E. measurements? Was HMS PMT measured for Q.E.?

MC SIMULATIONS

  • Description of the simulation(s) performed, e.g.,
    • predictions of photoelectron signal
    • uniformity of signal
    • average number of PMTs that trigger per event
    • timing resolution of detector
  • Light collection efficiency

PERFORMANCE

  • Results from cosmic measurements
    • signal from 1.030 and 1.015 aerogel, single column(?)
    • 1.030 to 1.015 signal ratio, for single column of aerogel (can add calculation, prototype and MC ratios for comparison?)

SUMMARY AND OUTLOOK

  • Possibility of improvements:
    • additional tray with even lower refractive index (when material becomes available)
  • Installation and tests with beam to come
