JLAB DETECTOR UPDATES (Arthur + everyone)

  • SP-11 aerogel tiles were transported from CUA to JLab (Ian, TH) and are ready for installation
  • Discussion about SP-11 aerogel tray and tile installation:
  • difference to other three trays: has a 90x60 cm^2 inner frame constructed from carbon fiber that can be moved around the tray if spectrometer optics require it
  • inner frame dimensions are large enough so that tiles will not have to be cut
  • handling tiles should be done "by-hand" - using tools will damage the surface (have experienced that with higher refractive index tiles)
  • for 8 layers will need ~430 tiles (have ~40 spares)
  • every box brought from CUA to JLab includes two tiles that were checked for optical properties - boxes are marked with black tape
  • in preparation for cosmic tests of SP-11 tray in hall have setup a space in the E Storage Building at JLab
  • mark tray top/bottom on the tray before installing it in the spectrometer
  • Discussion about NPS PbWO4 prototype
  • 3x3 PbWO4 prototype is working as expected - completed signals checks
  • construction of a smaller single-crystal prototype is ongoing - this would be a more efficient setup for the magnetic shielding studies than the 3x3 counter, which was optimized for temperature dependence studies and cooling system
  • Helmholtz coil setup is available for our tests now, includes a rotatable dark box (may not be reliable in terms of light tightness)
  • Action Items:
  • Estimate density of materials for SP-11 tray - important for delta electron generation/contribution in experiments
  • Finish single-crystal prototype construction for PMT shielding tests in magnetic field
  • Locate PMTs and active dividers (check with FIU and ODU as well)
  • Redo current-field measurements for Helmholtz coil
  • Magnetic shielding studies with mu-metal shield on PMT only and field on order 20-25 Gauss (not exceeding 50 Gauss) - test with different PMT axis orientation along magnetic field

CRYSTAL READOUT ALTERNATIVES (Andres, Rishabh, Rich)

  • Discussion about setup contructed at CUA with APDs on loan from Giessen Univ.
  • setup is complete and ready to take data
  • Action item: send SiPM kit back to CAEN

DATA ANALYSES AND NEW IDEAS (Salina, Marco, TH)

  • Discussion about projections for number of pions detected in with CUA's running kaon experiment and possible additional physics
  • results look promising
  • Action item: make estimations of additional processes contributing and possibly limiting kaon data acquisition
  • Discussion about new initiative: pion and kaon structure function measurements at EIC - data at larger x than what was achievable at HERA would allow to constrain gluon content in pion and kaon (unknown), understand Goldstone theorem (for any spontaneously broken symmetry there is an excitation etc.) and in that context empirical access to origin of hadron masses

DISCUSSION ITEMS FOR NEXT MEETINGS

  • 10/12 DIRC reconstruction/tracking (Greg)
  • 10/19 Pixel detectors at CMS (Rachel)
  • Along with updates on:
  • Update on JLab detectors (Arthur)
  • Data Analyses (Marco, Salina, TH, ...)
  • Other...
